Vesper Promotes High-tech Opportunity For High School Students

COLUMBUS, OH -- Know any outstanding freshmen and Sophomores in high school who are interested in science, engineering, mathematics or computers? I have recently been contacted by The Ohio State University Summer Institute to help them locate talented students to come to Columbus for the opportunity of a lifetime.

The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC), normally reserved for Ohio’s leading scientists and engineers, will be offering students a glimpse at how advances in high performance computing and networking will likely change the way we work, play, shop and learn in the next century.

Summer Institute ‘99: “Computing and Networking for the New Millennium,” will be held July 12-23. Students will get hands-on experience using very rare high performance computers and networking systems.

Selection for the program is based on academic credentials, teacher recommendation, and responses to the problem solving section of the application. The application deadline is April 30, 1999.

The only cost associated with the summer program is lodging for those not close enough to commute. Students may stay in a dormitory on the OSU campus for $95 per week.

Requests for application materials should be sent to:

Applications are also available online at http:www.osc.edu/SI/.

In addition to being the opportunity of a lifetime for students interested in computers, it is also a great way for students to distinguish themselves on a college or job application.

Not enough students from the 72nd House District have been represented in years past. Since the program began in 1989, only one student from the 72nd House District has attended the OSC Summer Institute. I would love to see that trend change. If you know any high school freshman or Sophomore students interested in science and computers, please encourage them to apply!
